not gugu

Amidst all the different versions of Pokerface, I scoured a few and these are my picks! Enjoy~

Imagine Chris Brown singing this song ie. poke-her-face. Haha! Kidding. Chris, you still my homie!

I love this cover up! Just picture yourself waking up in ungodly hours to this song... and suddenly you are in a bar somewhere in New Orleans. And you see the old jukebox in the corner. (Probably broken as well, considering the repeating lines in the lyrics)

Sounds so 50s or 60s-ish right?

**

Turn up your volume for this.

This version is simply amazing! Especially at time 0:40 and 1:50.

*Gasps!* Check this guy out!! Makes you wonder whether this is the original version right?

it has been long overdue...

The 1918 flu pandemic (commonly referred to as the Great Spanish Flu or The Great Swine Flu) was an influenza pandemic that spread to nearly every part of the world. It was caused by an unusually virulent and deadly Influenza A virus strain of subtype H1N1. Historical and epidemiological data are inadequate to identify the geographic origin of the virus. Most of its victims were in the prime of life, in contrast to most influenza outbreaks which predominantly affect juvenile, elderly (probably benefit from earlier exposure), or otherwise weakened patients. The pandemic lasted from March 1918 to June 1920, spreading even to the Arctic and remote Pacific islands. It is estimated that anywhere from 20 to 100 million people were killed worldwide, or the approximate equivalent of one third of the population of Europe, more than double the number killed in World War I. Almost 80% of American casualties in the war was the result of the flu; not enemy fire. This extraordinary toll resulted from the extremely high illness rate of up to 50% and the extreme severity of the symptoms, suspected to be caused by cytokine storms. The pandemic is estimated to have affected up to one billion people: half the world's population at the time. This pandemic has been described as "the greatest medical holocaust in history" and may have killed more people than the Black Death.

- adapted from Wikipedia

But this swine flu is a new form of the old nemesis, and has been circulating widely since the "Russian flu" outbreak reintroduced H1N1 to the human population in 1977. And so, the virus has finally decided to come out of ‘hiding’ and try its hand on a new generation of humans. This shows that virus outbreaks are chronic. We should never discount that a particular disease has been completely eradicated, just because it hasn’t been around for decades. These types of viruses or microbes are the most deadly as they remain dormant. They will take their time to evolve into super-virus or super-microbes which are more resistant to our current drugs. The new strain, A/H1N1 strain of swine flu virus has the combination that of birds’, pigs’, and humans’ flu virus but still very treatable. Another reason to the genesis of deadly diseases and outbreaks from animals particularly livestock is the fact that these animals are constantly fed with antibiotics for the sole purpose to prevent any pandemics. In fact, 70% of known antibiotics are used on them. They should be practically immune to everything right? But this measure is like us humans shooting at our own foot; we get more than we give. By doing so, we are only giving microbes more chance and luxury to evolve as they like. And I don’t have to say it twice that microbe can divide and multiply incessantly and at such a rapid rate. If they multiply into a ‘mutant’ form and somehow found that it suits the condition around them, they could ‘spread this news’ to the other microbes and that is how a new strain is formed. One which is highly resistant to antibiotics.

The current WHO pandemic alert phase for the Swine Flu is 4. **** Latest! It's now 5!

Some facts about swine flu:

How does it spread?

- do not typically infect humans – except in close proximity ie farmers

- human-human spread “documented”

- not transmitted by food – internal temperature of >70°C kills swine flu virus

Signs & Symptoms (S&S)

- flu like – fever, lethargy, runny nose, cough, sore throat, lack of appetite

- to some – vomiting, diarrhoea

Treatment (Tx)

- resistant to two common drugs – amantadine & rimantadine

- vaccines for human seasonal flu would not provide protection – H1N1 virus for human and swine are different

- “seed vaccine” has been specifically tailored to this swine flu – will be manufactured if deemed necessary

- Swiss drug company Roche Holding AG said WHO has enough anti-flu Tamiflu (first defence against influenze pandemic – effective against bird flu) for 5 million people

o Full Tx (5 days) – 10 capsules twice a day within 48 hours of onset of s&s

........................................................................................................................................................................

I think this pandemic is potentially VERY SERIOUS. History may repeat itself. Take care folks!

Wash your hands before eating!

get inspired today

Shame on you. This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you're going to let it be the worst. And I guarantee a week won't go by in your life you won't regret walking out, letting them get the best of you. Well, I'm not going home. We've come too far! And I'm going to stay right here and fight for this lost cause. A day may come when the courage of men fails... but it is not THIS day. The line must be drawn HERE. This far, no further! I'm not saying it's going to be easy. You're going to work harder than you ever worked before. But that's fine, we'll just get tougher with it! If a person grits his teeth and shows real determination, failure is not an option. That's how winning is done! Believe me when I say we can break this army here, and win just one for the Gipper. But I say to you what every warrior has known since the beginning of time: you've got to get mad. I mean plum mad dog mean. If you would be free men, then you must fight to fulfill that promise! Let us cut out their living guts one inch at a time, and they will know what we can do! Let no man forget how menacing we are. We are lions! You're like a big bear, man! This is YOUR time! Seize the day, never surrender, victory or death... that's the Chicago Way! Who's with me? Clap! Clap! Don't let Tink die! Clap! Alright! Let's fly! And gentlemen in England now abed shall know my name is the Lord when I tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our Independence Day!

'Heroes' needs a booster shot

You know what Sylar remind me of??

He reminds me of a bacteria!!

Why you asked??

Well... he takes people's power like how a bacteria does!! Okay... maybe not exactly like that. But this is how bacteria works. The reason why they are highly adaptable is that they are able to adsorb genetic components from the genetic pool around them in just a short period of time. For example you are a bacteria. One day you decide to fly. So you decide to take the genetic transcript from a grasshopper. Now you can fly! Then if you decided to go for a swim, you take the necessary components of a shark. Now you can swim... and terrorise people... and so much more!

This is how bacteria works. This is why most bacteria-causing diseases can evolve. That is why after awhile, antibiotics can't work against them. And people... okay... hopefully I can provide that service one day... have to come up with different drugs to combat these minute monsters. Also, when they evolve, they can somehow share their genetic components to other bacteria so as they can be immune to the antibiotics as well. I really admire their unity.

Which brings us to vaccination... I spent so many weeks reading about this for my poster presentation and report for the last semester. It was really interesting! Especially the debate on whether kids should or shouldn't be vaccinated. So each time I am asked about this topic, I can passionately speak from both sides of the debate. Anyway, the preparation went quite well I would say. My group and I even had time to joke about it.

We sang...

Immuniser, immune-immuniser,
You're a immuniser
Oh, immuniser, oh, you're a immuniser, baby
You, you, you are.
You, you, you are.
Immuniser, Immuniser, Immuniser (Immuniser)

Ahh... The things pharmacist do :p

Anyway, I am still waiting for the penultimate episode of Heroes to finish downloading. Heroes have been rather lame of late. I hope there is a good ending to Season 3.

I need more music in my life

Going to make this brief:

*Lazy*

I had a dentist appointment today. Thought it would be just a checkup. After all, it was FREE. But the doctor told me that my teeth was dirty ie got plaques. I could see it for myself on the mirror.

So should I pay RM65 to get all those yucky stuff off?

Well I did.

My teeth haven't been this thoroughly clean for a year plus already I think. So hopefully, many bacteria colonies have been terminated.

While, the doctor was scaling, I could have sworn amid the gushing of water from her equipments and the scratching of her tools on my teeth, I could have sworn I heard faint voice as if scratching teeth at the right resonance could somehow tap into radio frequency or perhaps something else. Creepy.

part III - salt talk

They say eyes are the windows to the soul.

If you stare closely into a cheerful person's eye; I mean if you really stare right into the person's eye, you may not see what is portrayed outside. On some people, you may see everything that you already know. A perfect resemblance of the dude or dudette themselves. But what of others? What you may see is a frost-covered broken window. And beyond that, housed a combination of things, but mostly things that you wouldn't expect.

As crazy as he may be, it's important to know that you don't know the person till you really get to know him. It takes years to know something about someone. It may take you forever to know him well. But why would you wanna do that? Unless you wanna be him; but that is just creepy.

I have noticed a few people like that. So, when they are down right down. It's quite hard to fathom what is capable of 'breaking' them. I supposed it's natural to assume superman will always be superman. Somehow he will always save the day; no matter how much pickles or rather kryptonite he is soaked in. But then again, every hero, even superman needs saving. Every Lois, Perry, and Jimmy just have to notice that he needs it. They should be tactful; not sneer like a bloody snake. No man or woman are like the weather. Some can't take criticism well.

Also, I have learnt that pranks don't work on a person if the person mean nice in the first place. To take advantage of it is absolutely dispicable. I wonder if there is a relationship between emoiety and sleep deprivation. I would imagine so. I am a live proof; although the double blind tests are not conducted in this case yet.

part II - sleepy

Phew. It sure has been a hectic last 24 hours. Burnt the midnight oil trying to finish yet another Phys Pharm report. Pure exhaustion mind you. Plus had PVC again today. Luckily our lecturer had given us some leeway in this particular report. Oh by the way, this lecturer won't be teaching us next time anymore. SAD. Anyway, we could do it in groups. Who knows? It could have been worse. This semester, we have all been plagued with reports, reports, assignments, and did I mention reports?

We won't have time to catch our breaths before yet another pile of workload enters our 'In' tray. It's tiring of course. But somehow, I find it interesting writing reports, especially as I get to read some facts of journals. Some can be very fascinating. I never knew reading of official journals could be like Nitrogen Narcosis to me. Speaking of which, I could use some 'relief of anxiety and a feeling of tranquility and mastery of the environment' (Wikipedia). Yeah. Very important for us to quote from where we get our facts; although it's really not advisable getting from Wiki.

Exams coming soon. I already watched Heroes ep 22. Time to get back to work.

part I - suffocation

Let me tell you a story...

Once upon a time, there was a young butterfly. This butterfly loved playing around in the flowery bushes in the jungle. One day, he noticed this crimson rose at one particular hedge. He has never visited this part of the jungle before. However, this rose seemed very enticing to him. He continued to play in the other bushes. But always returned to this rose at the end of the day. One day… well night or whatever, he decided to tell this rose how beautiful it was. The rose neither responded nor glowed with this compliment but instead grew torns so thick that the butterfly was too cautious to approach it anymore. The butterfly waited for the torns to wilt but to no avail. The butterfly felt sad as each passing day, he doesn’t feel welcome anymore. He tried to play around in the other bush but his heart was still for the rose. For all the misery this poor butterfly was feeling, he made up his mine to forget about the rose and move on with life. Everyday, he still played at the bush but paid no attention to the rose. He started to feel much better. He was becoming happier. Even when the rose bloomed each day, he managed to keep everything in check. He thought that the days were about to get even better when the Animals Grand Movement was opening its council for new members. The butterfly felt that he had earned a place.

But he was overlooked…

The rose got a spot. And he was rekindled with a rush of emotions that was just too much for him. He just couldn’t accept everything although he gave his best wishes to the rose. Everyday was agony for the butterfly. Was this a cruel twist of fate meant for the butterfly to learn to reconcile things? He didn’t think so. He tried to let the world pass by him while he avoided being part of the movement anymore. He managed to see the brighter side of things. The rose spoke to him that night. Somehow, the rose managed to pick the butterfly up on his antennae. The rose felt the disappointment of the butterfly. He said he was and quickly tried to brush the rose aside. He just wished that he was out of coverage for just that night. But the rose kept talking until the butterfly decided to intentionally provoke the rose. It ended the conversation abruptly. The butterfly felt an uncontrollable intense emotion. He plotted to just treat everyday the same and take no notice of the rose. But it was harder to avoid thoughts about the rose this time. It wasn’t as easy as before. Everything that he had before as a distraction was now no longer his but the rose’s. He felt the only thing else he cared for was taken away from him.

The very next day, the butterfly woke up early. His wings were no more as colourful. He no more fluttered, but glided with minimum effort. He was in a state of depression. No honey could make his day anymore. He knew he had to see the flower again, which was all too much for him. He decided to remain still at the bush hidden from the rose. He hoped the rose would not notice his presence. However he realised it was impossible. By being too still, he somehow drew attention to himself. Even the rose noticed and reached him telepathically again. The butterfly wished he had snipped his antennaes off or rather not realised the tingling. The butterfly just said that he was feeling off colour in hope that no more questions were asked. He was wrong. But he acted it out and couldn’t wish more for the day to end any sooner.

During lunch, he realised he may have to be with the rose again. So, he decided to get something on the go and went to the circle to play with the other butterflies. He felt like it was home, and his colours started to reappear. He didn’t want to leave. But he knew he had to sooner or later. He delayed as much as he could. Back in the bush, the other resting spots were gone, save for one just beside the rose. He cursed his luck but he didn’t have a choice. He didn’t want to raise any suspicions from the bush community. The bush community doesn’t know about the whole story. So the butterfly wanted to keep it that way. While perching quietly, so many things played out in the butterfly’s mind. He was on the verge of a breakdown. The way the rose tried to act friendly only added fuel to flame. Also the new lion approached him about the next event. He was unaware he was still involved. But everything about the movement no longer mean anything to him. He felt he was overlooked and that he wouldn’t want to be a part of it anymore. He knew he had to keep everything intact. There was no way he was going to unfold his wings. His colours grew darker at each passing moment. He wondered if his vision were to grow dark as well. His eyes slowly teared up as he tried to fight the internal conflict valiantly. He was on his own. He couldn’t turn to anyone no more. He felt a sense of loneliness.

Pictures and thoughts flashed through his mind. He thought of why he was feeling this madness. He thought of how he tried to drown his misery before. He thought of how he tried to bury away the pain. He thought of the perfect picture of how he had an envisage life in the jungle would be. Then, he realised nothing was ever achieved. He still felt miserable. He still feel the pain. He still had feelings for the rose.

He still had feelings for the rose.

But that was something he realised he couldn’t express. He was out of options. Fortunately time was on his side. He left the bush, to dance with the other butterflies. The rose had forbade him to, but once again he defied the rose. He realised the only way he can live ‘happily’ was by living in a world of lies. He knew that if the rose loathed him once more, he can have a happily ever after life. He realised he can and should no longer let the rose know how he really feels for it. The butterfly is ready to begin life without the rose once again.
